Bénin’s Romuald Wadagni sets bold agenda for 2026–2033 term

Just days after taking office, Benin’s new President, Romuald Wadagni—who succeeds Patrice Talon—presided over his first-ever Council of Ministers on May 28, 2026. This inaugural meeting set the tone for his seven-year mandate (2026–2033), outlining the core values, priorities, and governance approach that will define his leadership.

The President made two key priorities immediately clear. First, tackling extreme poverty and closing the widening development gap between Benin’s regions. Wadagni emphasized a more ambitious regional development strategy to help marginalized communities catch up with urban centers. Second, he underscored the need for robust security measures, given the ongoing instability in neighboring countries.

The government’s operational structure is also evolving. Monthly Council of Ministers meetings—held on the first Wednesday—will be complemented by twice-monthly interministerial committee sessions on the first and third Mondays. Thematic cabinet meetings will fill the gaps, ensuring tighter oversight of sector-specific policies. This streamlined governance model reflects a commitment to discipline, consistency, and measurable outcomes.

Closing the session, Wadagni urged his cabinet to ‘roll up their sleeves and get to work,’ stressing that the quality of their efforts will directly impact citizens’ living standards. This first meeting laid the groundwork for a presidency focused on results, equitable growth, and national unity—challenges as vast as the opportunities ahead for Benin.
