Yaoundé prepares to host major francophone parliamentary gathering
With global attention turning toward Africa’s diplomatic calendar, Cameroon is making final preparations to host a landmark event next year. The 51st General Assembly of the Assemblée Parlementaire de la Francophonie (APF) is set to take place in Yaoundé from July 7 to 12, 2026, marking Cameroon’s third major international conference within a year.
diplomatic coordination and logistical groundwork underway
The country’s diplomatic corps is working tirelessly to ensure the event’s success. Cameroon’s Ambassador to France, André-Magnus Ekoumou, held high-level discussions with the President of the National Assembly, Theodore Datouo, to review progress on preparations. Their meeting focused on Cameroon’s readiness to host the assembly, aligning with the strategic vision outlined by President Paul Biya.
visa facilitation and parliamentary diplomacy in focus
The Cameroonian embassy in France has implemented streamlined procedures for issuing courtesy visas to all incoming delegations. During the discussions, President Datouo underscored the importance of reinforcing parliamentary democracy and commended the ambassador’s efforts in supporting Cameroonian citizens in France, particularly their participation in Promote 2026, the major business forum scheduled at the Yaoundé Congress Palace.
innovative projects and digital transformation
The assembly’s preparations also include forward-thinking initiatives. Plans for a new parliamentary museum at the National Assembly are underway, with President Datouo expressing interest in leveraging French expertise for shared best practices. The project emphasizes digital integration, reflecting modern trends in institutional heritage preservation.
key election and continental representation
Among the critical agenda items for the Yaoundé gathering is the election of the next Secretary-General of the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF). The process has drawn significant attention, with the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Rwanda emerging as the leading African candidates.
