Astrid Pérez, President of the Canaries Parliament, welcomed Moroccan Consul General Fatiha El Kamouri this Wednesday to mark the conclusion of her four-year term strengthening institutional relations between Morocco and the Spanish archipelago.
During the meeting, Pérez expressed gratitude for El Kamouri’s accomplished mandate while emphasizing the vital role of dialogue and cooperation between the two institutions. She also extended warm wishes for El Kamouri’s next professional endeavors.
Fatiha El Kamouri, of Sahrawi origin, arrived in the Canaries in 2022 after serving six years as Morocco’s consul in Bilbao, where she played a key role in strengthening institutional relations and supporting the Moroccan community across the islands.
Local sources highlight El Kamouri’s significant and positive impact on enhancing bilateral relations between the Canaries government, led by Fernando Clavijo, and Morocco. In reaffirming support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative for Western Sahara, Clavijo aligns the region with Spain’s foreign policy, demonstrating a clear understanding of shared security interests and substantial economic benefits.
Beyond official visits and multiple sectoral collaboration agreements, the recent reception of a Souss-Massa regional delegation in Las Palmas perfectly illustrates this new dynamic. By hosting Karim Achengli and over 80 business representatives, Clavijo transforms political discourse into tangible actions.
This institutional rapprochement demonstrates the Canaries’ emergence as a natural partner in Morocco’s development, rejecting previous attempts to divide the two regions. Key sectors of this collaboration span water desalination expertise, infrastructure management, and technological research, all finding favorable resonance in southern Morocco.
Businesses from both regions are increasingly engaging to implement joint projects, proving that mutual interest forms the most solid foundation for lasting peace and shared prosperity. The work accomplished in recent years by Consul Fatiha El Kamouri has been instrumental in achieving this.
