Djed Spence completes medical ahead of 35m euro Inter move from Tottenham

English right-back Djed Spence has touched down in Italy ahead of his long-anticipated medical examination with Inter Milan. The 26-year-old, whose transfer from Tottenham Hotspur is valued at a potential €35 million, arrived in Milan late Thursday as part of the final stages of his move to Serie A.

Medical milestone in Milan

Spence’s arrival in Italy follows a completed agreement between the two clubs, with Tottenham agreeing to sell the versatile defender after a standout World Cup campaign with England. The initial transfer fee stands at €31.5 million, though performance-related bonuses could push the total to €35 million. Tottenham also secured a 10% sell-on clause in the deal, ensuring future financial upside. The player’s contract negotiations with Inter were reportedly seamless, paving the way for the transfer to move forward.

World Cup breakthrough fuels move

The timing of Spence’s transfer is no coincidence. His impressive performances at the 2026 World Cup, where he played a key role in England’s run to the third-place playoff, caught the attention of Inter’s hierarchy. The Serie A giants, in need of a high-calibre replacement for outgoing right-back Denzel Dumfries—who joined Real Madrid in July—saw Spence as the ideal solution. His prior six-month loan stint at Genoa in 2024 also provided him with invaluable experience of Italy’s tactical demands.

Spence bids farewell to Tottenham

Spence’s departure from Tottenham marks the end of a four-year spell in north London, during which he made 85 senior appearances and secured a Europa League winners’ medal. However, his future at the club was increasingly uncertain following the arrivals of Pedro Porro and Andy Robertson, who now occupy key positions on the right and left flanks. Roberto De Zerbi’s appointment as manager further signalled limited opportunities for Spence, leading to his eventual exit. The club’s narrow escape from relegation last season added to the turbulence of his final campaign at Tottenham.

Next steps for Spence at Inter

With his medical examination set for Friday, Spence is one step closer to completing his move to Inter. Once cleared, he will be formally unveiled at San Siro and begin preparations for the upcoming Serie A season. The defender’s prior experience in Italy will undoubtedly ease his transition, as he looks to establish himself in one of Europe’s most competitive leagues.
