A particularly intense parliamentary session unfolded at the National Assembly as Deputy Abdou Mbow delivered a stirring address. From the chamber’s podium, the lawmaker presented a troubling assessment of the nation’s state, emphatically stating, « there is a crisis in this country ».
During his intervention, Abdou Mbow specifically referenced the Customs and the DAF (Direction de l’Administration et des Finances), proceeding to condemn practices he believes jeopardize public finances and national stability.
Mbow notably asserted that « when former Prime Ministers permit themselves to misuse funds allocated for Casamance for political objectives, this country is in danger ». These serious allegations, left unsubstantiated by the deputy, immediately prompted an intervention from the President of the National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko.
On multiple occasions, the Assembly President urged Mbow to « remain on topic » as the deputy attempted to continue his line of argument regarding the nation’s financial integrity.
The deputy then invoked a prior incident involving Guy Marius Sagna, arguing that Sagna had also made statements exceeding the scope of the debated subject during a previous session. « Guy Marius Sagna is a deputy. He spoke, he attacked the president, » Mbow contended.
Ousmane Sonko again interrupted Abdou Mbow, reiterating his demand to adhere to the subject at hand. Nevertheless, the parliamentarian persisted, insisting that Guy Marius Sagna had similarly « strayed from the topic » without being prevented from completing his speech.
« Therefore, I firmly reiterate that, in this country, it must be understood that we have a nation in peril, » Abdou Mbow stressed with unwavering conviction.
As the deputy remained steadfast in his assertions, the exchange escalated further. Ousmane Sonko then issued a stern warning: « Stick to the topic or you will vacate the podium. » The President of the National Assembly then added, « I do not wish for you to leave in the same manner as last time, » alluding to a previous contentious incident involving the parliamentarian within the legislative chamber.
Abdou Mbow reportedly refused to back down, maintaining his critique of public funds management. « We cannot embezzle our public funds, then seek refuge in the National Assembly. People will speak out, » he concluded, leaving a profound statement on the floor of the Assembly.
