Gabonese leader arrives in Gambia for key diplomatic visit

Gabon’s head of state, President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema, touched down in Banjul yesterday for a four-day state visit aimed at strengthening bilateral ties between Gabon and Gambia. The arrival marked the start of a carefully planned itinerary designed to deepen cooperation and explore new avenues for partnership.

President Oligui Nguema was received by Gambia’s counterpart, President Adama Barrow, for a private meeting followed by structured bilateral talks at the official residence. Discussions centered on reviewing existing cooperation frameworks and identifying fresh opportunities to advance shared economic goals. Both leaders reaffirmed their nations’ commitment to fostering sustainable development through enhanced collaboration. A second meeting is scheduled for today with President Barrow.

The visit underscores the strategic importance of the Libreville-Banjul axis, with the Gabonese leader set to tour key government facilities and culturally significant sites. His itinerary includes the National Food and Drug Quality Control Laboratory in Brusubi, the University of Gambia, the Farato National Emergency Treatment Center, and the renowned Kachikally Crocodile Pool in Bakau.

The programme also features a state banquet hosted by President Barrow in honor of his distinguished guest.

Gambia’s economic backbone

Gambia’s economy thrives on tourism, agriculture, and re-export trade. Recent indicators show a robust real GDP growth rate of 6.1%, driven largely by a thriving services sector.

This official visit is part of a broader continental tour by Gabon’s president, focusing on West African nations to reinforce diplomatic and economic partnerships.
