Gabon’s triumphant return to global bond markets with africa’s largest deal of 2026

AFG Capital Ltd proudly announces the successful return of Gabon to international bond markets after years of absence. As the government’s exclusive financial advisor, the firm played a pivotal role in structuring a landmark sovereign bond issuance totaling $920 million.

This historic transaction underscores the growing influence of AFG Holding through its subsidiary AFG Capital in facilitating major public and private financial operations across Africa. The deal was co-led by financial giants Cygnum Capital and Citigroup Global Markets, while White & Case served as legal counsel to the Gabonese state.

With an overwhelming response from institutional investors, the bond issuance became the largest sovereign financial operation in Africa for 2026. It not only reaffirms Gabon’s renewed credibility in global finance but also aligns with the government’s broader economic reform agenda outlined in the 2026-2030 National Growth and Development Plan (PNCD).

Record demand drives oversubscription and funding boost

The Gabonese Ministry of Economy, Finance, Debt Management, and State Participation confirmed the issuance’s resounding success on July 30. Initially targeting $750 million, the bond was massively oversubscribed, allowing Gabon to secure an additional $170 million—bringing the final amount raised to $920 million.

This strong investor appetite reflects renewed confidence in Gabon’s economic trajectory and its commitment to macroeconomic stability and diversification, as emphasized in the PNCD. The funds will be allocated to critical public investment projects and the settlement of outstanding state arrears, in line with the 2026 revised finance law.

Key financial terms and strategic roadshow

The bond carries a 9.375% coupon, a seven-year maturity, and a three-year grace period before amortization begins, with the final maturity set for 2033. The Ministry highlighted the pivotal role of a high-impact international investor roadshow conducted ahead of the launch, spearheaded by President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema.

This strategic outreach directly contributed to the issuance’s overwhelming success, demonstrating Gabon’s proactive approach to re-engaging with global capital markets under robust leadership.

Gabon joins regional peers in capital market revival

Gabon’s return to international markets follows similar moves by neighboring CEMAC countries this year. Cameroon raised $750 million in January, while the Republic of the Congo secured $850 million in May. Gabon now stands as the third Central African nation to tap international markets in 2026, signaling a broader regional trend toward financial reintegration.

In parallel, Libreville continues technical negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). An IMF review mission is scheduled for September, with talks advancing toward a potential economic and financial support program by year-end.
