Kinshasa is set to gain a significant new eight-lane thoroughfare, designed to substantially enhance traffic flow across a vital sector of the Congolese capital. President Félix Tshisekedi officially inaugurated construction on Tuesday for the 2.02-kilometer-long Étienne Tshisekedi Boulevard. In a landmark ceremony held on Tuesday in Kinshasa, the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Félix Tshisekedi, laid the foundation stone for the forthcoming Étienne Tshisekedi Boulevard, marking the official commencement of the extensive construction. The event saw the attendance of prominent figures including Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka and the capital’s Governor, Daniel Bumba. This transformative initiative envisions the creation of a primary axis stretching 2,020 meters, featuring eight dedicated lanes – four in each direction. Complementing this will be a 750-meter, two-lane access ramp. The project’s comprehensive scope further includes the implementation of robust drainage networks, strategically placed bridges, culverts, and modern lighting installations. The contractual period for completion is stipulated at twelve months.

CR20 embarks on its inaugural public works in the Democratic Republic of Congo

The execution of these critical works has been entrusted to the China Railway 20th Bureau Group (CR20), a Chinese enterprise renowned for its expertise in infrastructure development. According to Zhang Guoxu, the General Manager of China Railway 20th Bureau Group Angola International Company, this project represents CR20’s first public works contract within the Democratic Republic of Congo. He affirmed the company’s commitment to deploying all necessary resources to adhere strictly to the project schedule and technical specifications. Mr. Guoxu also emphasized the stringent demands for structural quality and diligent management of the construction’s environmental footprint. Concurrently, Governor Daniel Bumba underscored the imperative of upholding all technical mandates and meeting the contractual deadlines. The Governor expressed his anticipation that the new infrastructure would swiftly contribute to alleviating traffic congestion and improving mobility in the affected urban areas.

Prior to the groundbreaking ceremony, President Félix Tshisekedi received a comprehensive briefing, including detailed presentations on the boulevard’s proposed route, planned layout, and key structural elements. Visual renderings of the future thoroughfare were also shared. The overarching objective is to significantly augment road capacity along this corridor and streamline movement within a capital frequently grappling with severe traffic bottlenecks. The Étienne Tshisekedi Boulevard is thus poised to integrate into the existing road network, providing a wider and more efficiently equipped infrastructure. Its ultimate effectiveness, however, will hinge on the superior quality of its construction, punctual completion, and seamless integration with Kinshasa’s other major traffic arteries. Upon the conclusion of the projected twelve months of work, this new pathway is expected to become a vital component of the capital’s road system, aiming to relieve pressure on several currently overburdened routes.
