The Mali government’s ambitious goal of vaccinating 70% of its population aged 12 and above against Covid-19 remains far from reality. Current coverage stands at just 8%, highlighting the urgent need for intensified efforts. In response, a United Nations delegation visited Mali in early October to collaborate with local authorities on strategies to meet national vaccination targets outlined in the National Deployment and Vaccination Plan (PNDV).
A senior UN representative emphasized the ongoing nature of vaccination campaigns, stating, “Multiple campaigns are currently underway. We are here to work with the government and its partners to support these efforts and protect the population from Covid-19.”
challenges in gaining public trust
While organizational efforts by the Mali Red Cross in Bamako have strengthened the response framework—including volunteer training, community sensitization, and distribution of protective equipment—the challenge of convincing hesitant citizens persists. Many Malians remain reluctant to get vaccinated, particularly as Covid-19 cases decline across West Africa.
Public health experts continue to stress the importance of vaccination not only for individual protection but also to prevent potential resurgences of the virus. Despite progress in pandemic management, low uptake remains a critical barrier to achieving herd immunity in Mali.
