Maroc France celebrations highlight deep bilateral ties in Rabat

The French Residence in Rabat became the epicenter of diplomacy and celebration on July 14th, as Morocco and France commemorated French National Day with a reception underscoring their exceptional partnership. The event, graced by high-ranking officials, diplomats, and influential figures from both nations, marked a pivotal moment in the bilateral relationship under the leadership of France’s new ambassador to Morocco, Philippe Lalliot.

a new chapter in franco-moroccan diplomacy

Philippe Lalliot, who recently presented his credentials to King Mohammed VI in early June, used the occasion to share his observations about Morocco. He highlighted the nation’s quiet strength—a blend of deep-rooted traditions and forward-looking ambitions. The ambassador’s tour of key cities like Casablanca, Tangier, Marrakech, and Laâyoune further reinforced his impressions, culminating in the inauguration of the first Alliance Française in Laâyoune, a testament to the expanding cultural ties between the two countries.

Lalliot also paid tribute to the late Christophe Lecourtier, his predecessor, whose tenure was instrumental in revitalizing and solidifying the bilateral relationship. The ambassador emphasized the unbreakable bonds between the Moroccan and French peoples, citing the camaraderie displayed by supporters of both nations during the FIFA World Cup quarter-final as a shining example of their shared friendship.

sovereignty and strategic alignment

The question of Western Sahara took center stage in Lalliot’s address, where he reiterated France’s unwavering stance. Echoing President Emmanuel Macron’s July 2024 letter to King Mohammed VI, he emphasized that France views the future of Western Sahara within the framework of Morocco’s sovereignty. Paris continues to stand firmly beside Rabat on this critical issue, which Morocco considers vital to its national interests.

The ambassador also underscored the alignment between Morocco and France in upholding fundamental international principles, particularly in matters of security and regional stability.

economic and security cooperation

Economically, France remains Morocco’s largest foreign investor and employer, while bilateral cooperation extends into critical areas such as security. Lalliot noted Morocco’s pivotal role in safeguarding French interests by combating terrorism, drug trafficking, and irregular migration.

This robust partnership is set to reach new heights with the upcoming 15th High-Level Meeting between the two governments, scheduled for July 16th in Rabat. French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu will lead a delegation of twelve ministers to the summit, reflecting the intensity of political dialogue between the nations. Over the past two years, nearly forty ministerial visits have underscored the dynamism of this relationship.

a historic treaty on the horizon

Looking ahead, Philippe Lalliot revealed plans for a groundbreaking friendship treaty between Morocco and France—a first for Paris with a non-European nation. This landmark agreement is expected to be celebrated during a future state visit by King Mohammed VI to France, symbolizing the depth and ambition of their partnership.

The July 14th reception in Rabat was more than a celebration; it was a declaration of intent. As Morocco and France forge a new strategic chapter, their relationship stands as a model of cooperation, resilience, and shared vision for the future.
