New partnership brings sustainable water solutions to Minawao camp

In a major step toward long-term stability, the Cameroon Water Utilities (CAMWATER) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) have finalized a strategic agreement to enhance drinking water availability for displaced populations and local residents in the Extrême-Nord region.

This collaboration marks a significant expansion of efforts to support vulnerable groups in the northern reaches of the country. On June 30, 2026, in Yaoundé, the two organizations formalised a partnership specifically designed to upgrade the water supply systems serving the Minawao refugee camp and its neighboring communities.

The agreement was signed by Dr. Blaise Moussa, the General Manager of CAMWATER, and Yvette Muhimpundu, the UNHCR Representative in Cameroun. This initiative is a core component of the “Alternative Solutions for Minawao Camp” project, which operates with the critical support of the European Union, the German Cooperation (GIZ), and the UNHCR.

Under the terms of this new deal, CAMWATER is set to provide its technical mastery in the engineering, construction, and maintenance of water infrastructure. Simultaneously, the UNHCR will maintain its focus on safeguarding refugees and fostering community resilience, working hand-in-hand with the national authorities of Cameroun.

By joining forces, both entities aim to drastically improve the quality of life for refugees and host families. The project seeks to address the mounting challenges posed by population growth and the need for the responsible, sustainable management of vital water resources in the Extrême-Nord.
