Niger faces surge in displaced persons after violent attacks in Dosso

Several hundred residents have abandoned their homes in south-west Niger’s Dosso region following a series of mid-July assaults on local villages, local officials confirm. The attacks, which struck at least three villages in the Loga district on July 17, left dozens of civilians dead and injured, disrupting ongoing agricultural work in the area.

Unprecedented displacement in a region under pressure

The violence marks the first major displacement wave in this part of Dosso, a border area close to Benin and Nigeria. The timing coincides with the height of the farming season, compounding the impact on local livelihoods. A regional government representative stated that the attacks were carried out by armed groups, resulting in civilian casualties and forcing residents to seek refuge elsewhere.

Government response and ongoing security challenges

Nigerien authorities have attributed the assaults to jihadist factions linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, though no official death toll has been released. The country has been under military leadership for the past three years, and the government continues to face persistent threats from armed groups operating across the region.

Survivors have fled toward the Tahoua region, near the Nigerian border, while hundreds more have moved to Dogondoutchi, a major urban center roughly 100 kilometers from Loga, according to footage aired by state television.

Humanitarian strain in a decade-long conflict

By 2025, the United Nations reported that Niger was hosting over 450,000 internally displaced persons, primarily concentrated in three regions: Tillabéri (west), Diffa (south-east), and Tahoua (central-east). The escalation of violence along the borders with Benin and Nigeria has intensified in recent months, with armed factions deepening their presence in the area.

The ongoing instability has created a humanitarian crisis, as displaced families struggle to secure shelter, food, and safety amid recurring attacks and limited resources.
