Pedri opens door for Julian Alvarez at Barcelona, PSG on alert

Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly not abandoned their interest in Julian Alvarez, a pursuit that first emerged two years ago before he left Manchester City for Atletico Madrid. However, after the Colchoneros, it could be Barcelona this time that thwarts PSG’s plans, a scenario that would please Pedri, the Barcelona midfielder.

The Julian Alvarez saga has dominated the early weeks of the summer transfer window, which officially opened on June 15 and closes on September 1. The 26-year-old Argentine international is currently playing in his second World Cup with Argentina on American soil. Under contract with Atletico Madrid until 2030, the Colchoneros striker does not plan to return to the Spanish capital once the 2026 World Cup ends.

“I think what’s best for everyone is a transfer”

On Monday, Argentina secured their spot in the round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup by defeating Austria (2-0). In the mixed zone, Julian Alvarez publicly expressed his desire to leave, hinting he wants to join Barcelona. “It’s not the time to talk about it, but I can’t hide either; I try to be an honest person. I’ve spoken with the people at Atletico Madrid and I think what’s best for everyone is a transfer. I want to fulfill my dream.”

“I hope this transfer can materialize, and if it does, then so much the better”

Bad news for PSG, who, as in the summer of 2024 before his move to Atletico Madrid, have kept a close eye on the rojiblanco club’s striker. Moreover, at Barcelona, the red carpet is already being rolled out for Julian Alvarez. Just look at Pedri‘s comments in an interview: “A transfer of Julian Alvarez to Barcelona? I think a lot of things need to happen for that. I don’t want to interfere with club matters or a player’s. It’s true that I love Julian as a player and I’ve always said I want the best players at Barça. I hope this transfer can materialize, and if it does, then so much the better.” The Barcelona midfielder has fired the starting gun; it remains to be seen whether Paris Saint-Germain will respond publicly or behind the scenes to tip the balance in its favor in the race for Alvarez‘s signature.
