Sir Jim Ratcliffe, co-owner of Manchester United, has taken a firm stance on Marcus Rashford’s future, blocking any potential transfer to six Premier League rivals. Despite the England international’s desire to leave Old Trafford, the club’s leadership is determined to prevent the embarrassment of seeing their homegrown talent thrive at a direct competitor.

Ratcliffe’s stance on domestic transfers

Ratcliffe’s intervention has halted Rashford’s potential move to top-flight rivals this summer. The 28-year-old forward returned to Carrington for pre-season training after a loan spell at Barcelona, but his long-term future at Manchester United remains uncertain. While Ratcliffe is open to removing Rashford from the club’s wage bill, he is unwilling to strengthen direct domestic rivals by sanctioning transfers to clubs such as Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, or Aston Villa.

Even loan moves to these clubs have been rejected, as United’s hierarchy fears Rashford could play a pivotal role in helping a rival secure a coveted Champions League spot—a scenario they deem deeply embarrassing.

Barcelona’s decision and Rashford’s form

Rashford spent last season on loan at Barcelona, rediscovering his best form with 14 goals and 14 assists in 49 appearances. However, the Catalan club opted not to make the deal permanent, instead splashing €80 million on Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon. Despite the Catalan club’s financial constraints, manager Hansi Flick praised Rashford, stating: “We don’t know what happens with players on loan; our situation isn’t easy. But I enjoy working with him. He’s a fantastic player and a fantastic person. I think the team misses him—it’ll be tough without him, but that’s life.”

Contract deadlock and Rashford’s future plans

After returning from the World Cup break, Rashford joined Manchester United’s pre-season camp in Dublin ahead of a friendly against Leeds United. However, his inclusion appears temporary. The forward is expected to hold crucial discussions with interim manager Michael Carrick following the team’s upcoming match against AC Milan in Poland. Rashford, now 28, is keen to turn the page on his time at Old Trafford and pursue a fresh start elsewhere.

The situation is further complicated by the remaining two years on his current contract. Rashford could stay at United for 24 months before leaving on a free transfer, a prospect that would result in significant financial losses for the club.

Possible exits beyond England

With domestic options seemingly off the table, Rashford may look to leagues abroad—Italy, Germany, or France—to secure a move that aligns with Manchester United’s valuation and his salary expectations.
