Senegal opposition leader slams president as manipulative puppet

Senegal’s opposition leader condemns president as ‘easily manipulated puppet’

During the inauguration of the Pastef party headquarters in Touba, 194 km east of Dakar, Ousmane Sonko, President of Senegal’s National Assembly, delivered a scathing critique of President Diomaye Faye. The event provided Sonko with a platform to voice his concerns about the current leadership, labeling the head of state as a puppet and easily influenced figure.

In his remarks, Sonko emphasized the risks of a weak and indecisive president, warning that such leadership could lead to national instability. He described Faye as someone who lacks firm convictions and is too susceptible to external influences, including from late political figures and even opposition factions. Sonko alleged that opposition groups manipulate the president by falsely suggesting he controls the defense and security forces and could secure a second term.

Once a staunch supporter of Diomaye Faye during the 2024 presidential election, Sonko now expresses regret, claiming that Faye was secretly working to undermine his own party from within. Sonko revealed that Faye’s efforts to consolidate power began during his tenure as Secretary-General and Coordinator of party cadres. Following his election as president, Faye allegedly believed he could effortlessly regain control over party members after their separation. However, Sonko asserted that no one followed him, highlighting the fractured relationship between the two leaders.

These comments underscore the growing tensions within Senegal’s political landscape, raising questions about governance and leadership in the country.
