In a recent interview, Ousmane Sonko, leader of Senegal’s Pastef party, addressed growing calls for the exclusion of President Diomaye Faye from the movement. Sonko emphasized that decisions regarding membership and disciplinary measures will be handled by the party’s governing bodies in due course, avoiding any hasty conclusions.
During the discussion, Sonko clarified that the process remains in its early stages. « The situation will be evaluated when the time comes, » he stated. « Pastef is a well-structured and organized party with clear procedures for handling grievances and potential exclusions. It is not up to me alone to decide—it is the responsibility of the party’s institutions. »
Addressing accusations of betrayal, Sonko distanced himself from the term, framing the issue in political rather than moral terms. « Trahison (betrayal) is a word tied to emotions and morality. I prefer to focus on political commitments, » he explained. « Many of the promises we made to the Senegalese people are not being fulfilled, and there seems to be no real intention to do so. That is the core of the matter—not personal or emotional judgments. »
Sonko’s remarks come amid rising tensions within the party, as some members demand accountability for unmet political pledges. While he acknowledged concerns over governance, he underscored that the party’s internal mechanisms will determine the next steps.
