Togo research chairs to boost national development

How can academic research better address the nation’s most pressing needs? This was the central question as leaders of Togo’s UNESCO university chairs convened in Lomé on July 9, 2026. Organized by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the gathering assessed ongoing initiatives and outlined a strategic roadmap to amplify the role of research in driving national growth.

Academics unite to strengthen research impact

Under the leadership of Deputy Minister Professor Gado Tchangbedji, the meeting brought together UNESCO chairs from public universities alongside representatives of the National Commission for UNESCO in Togo. The session served as a platform to evaluate progress, share challenges, and align future priorities.

The event featured key figures from Togo’s most influential UNESCO chairs, including the Renewable Energy Chair at the University of Lomé, the Women, Science and Sustainable Water Management Chair in West Africa at the University of Lomé, and the ICT and Higher Education Development Chair for West Africa at the University of Kara.

Research as a catalyst for national progress

Participants reviewed the core missions, completed projects, and ongoing challenges faced by these academic chairs. The overarching goal was to enhance their contribution to key national priorities such as energy transition, water resource management, gender equality, and digital transformation in higher education.

Building a unified research network

The discussions led to actionable recommendations, including the creation of a shared digital platform linking the UNESCO National Commission with all university chairs. This initiative aims to streamline collaboration, promote knowledge exchange, and facilitate joint research projects.

Additional proposals included strengthening partnerships between academic institutions and enlisting new technical and financial partners to support research initiatives. The aim is to foster a more cohesive research ecosystem capable of delivering tangible results.

Government calls for locally relevant research

Closing the meeting, Deputy Minister Professor Tchangbedji emphasized the need for research programs to align with Togo’s development priorities. He stressed that scientific output must yield practical solutions to support public policies and fuel economic and social transformation.

He also expressed hope that this gathering would mark a turning point for Togo’s higher education sector, fostering stronger ties between researchers, universities, and national institutions.

Toward a stronger scientific community

This initiative reflects the government’s commitment to leveraging the expertise within public universities. By deepening collaboration among UNESCO chairs, expanding partnerships, and realigning research efforts with national needs, Togo aims to build a robust scientific ecosystem that accelerates sustainable development.

The meeting signals a new chapter of structured cooperation among academic stakeholders, positioning research as a key driver of innovation and economic growth in the country.
