On the occasion of the 27th anniversary of the Throne Day, celebrated on Thursday, July 30, King Mohammed VI of Morocco received a significant message from then-US President Donald Trump. In this communication, President Trump unequivocally reaffirmed the United States’ recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara, offering his country’s full support for the Moroccan autonomy plan as the sole viable path to resolve the long-standing territorial dispute.
“The United States is clear: we acknowledge Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and endorse the serious, credible, and realistic Moroccan proposal for autonomy as the exclusive foundation for a just and lasting resolution,” President Trump emphasized in his message.
The former occupant of the White House asserted that “any alternative course of action merely prolongs the status quo,” deeming such a continuation “unacceptable.” He insisted, “This disagreement must conclude now, and the United States will persist in driving progress towards this objective.”
In a congratulatory message extended to King Mohammed VI and the Moroccan populace, Donald Trump highlighted the “250 years of American history and enduring friendship with Morocco,” describing a bond “forged in mutual trust and respect.”
Furthermore, the American President commended King Mohammed VI’s “wise leadership,” portraying him as “a pillar of stability.” He underscored Morocco’s “unwavering commitment to fostering peace, combating extremism, and safeguarding the security of both Americans and Moroccans, including through its pivotal role in the Abraham Accords, which exemplifies a valuable partnership for the United States.” Trump further stated, “To that end, we will also collaborate to ensure the security of the Sahel region.”
Regarding economic cooperation, the former US President confirmed instructing his teams “to advance economic and social development with Morocco, specifically within the territory of Western Sahara.” He identified technology, innovation, energy, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and defense as strategic sectors for this enhanced partnership.
“Together, we will usher in a new era,” the American President concluded, advocating for a relationship that prioritizes the collective interests of both nations’ citizens.
