Us embassy in Rabat marks 250 years of american independence and Morocco partnership

The United States embassy in Rabat commemorated the 250th anniversary of american independence on tuesday during its annual fourth of july reception, held for the first time at the historic chellah site.

The event brought together senior moroccan officials, diplomats, and partners from both the public and private sectors. It highlighted nearly 250 years of friendship and cooperation between the united states and the kingdom of Morocco, according to an embassy statement.

Morocco was the first nation to recognize american independence, helping to establish one of the oldest diplomatic relationships in u.s. history. The celebration underscored the strength of the bilateral partnership across diplomacy, security, trade, and investment, while also showcasing growing cooperation in innovation, infrastructure, and economic development.

The embassy highlighted america’s long-standing presence in Morocco, from the tangier american legation—the oldest u.s. diplomatic property abroad—to the recent opening of the new u.s. consulate general in casablanca. These milestones reflect a shared commitment to forward-looking collaboration.

Speaking at the event, u.s. ambassador to Rabat, richard duke buchan iii, emphasized that the 250th anniversary is an opportunity to celebrate a partnership deeply rooted in history, strengthened by trust, and firmly focused on the next 250 years.

“This partnership is a testament to our commitment to strengthening economic and people-to-people ties between our nations, particularly through efforts that support his majesty king mohammed vi’s vision of making the moroccan Sahara a hub for transatlantic partnership and opportunities,” the ambassador added.

The celebration also coincides with Morocco’s participation in the world cup hosted by the united states, offering another powerful example of the human connections that continue to deepen relations between the two countries.

The evening concluded with a fireworks and drone show, symbolizing the enduring friendship between the united states and Morocco, as well as a shared vision for the future, the statement said.
