Young Ivorian winger joins Real Madrid in record-breaking deal

young Ivorian winger joins Real Madrid in record-breaking deal

Real Madrid has officially announced the signing of Ivorian winger Yan Diomandé, aged 19, from RB Leipzig in a deal reportedly worth €140 million including bonuses. The transfer makes him the most expensive player in the club’s history and the most costly African footballer ever purchased.

The Spanish giants confirmed the seven-year agreement, keeping the exact fee undisclosed but acknowledging the record-breaking nature of the transaction. « Real Madrid and RB Leipzig have reached an agreement for the transfer of player Yan Diomandé, who will join our club until June 30, 2033, » the statement read.

From Leipzig to Madrid: a meteoric rise

Diomandé arrived at Leipzig in the summer of 2025 from Leganés, a Madrid-based club, and quickly established himself as one of Europe’s most promising talents. During his debut Bundesliga season, he netted 12 goals and provided 8 assists, earning recognition as the league’s best young player.

His versatility as a right or left winger, combined with standout performances for both club and country—including standout displays at the recent World Cup in North America—cemented his status as a transfer priority for Europe’s elite clubs. The Ivorian, born in Abidjan, was one of the most sought-after names in this summer’s transfer window.

A squad boost for Los Blancos

Diomandé becomes Madrid’s sixth signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Portuguese midfielder Bernardo Silva, Spanish full-back Marc Cucurella, French defender Ibrahima Konaté, Dutch right-back Denzel Dumfries, and Spanish striker Carlos Espi. Under the guidance of returning manager José Mourinho, the young talent is expected to slot directly into the starting lineup on the right flank, teaming up with global stars Kylian Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior.

The deal underscores Real Madrid’s relentless pursuit of elite talent, even at premium prices, as the club looks to maintain its dominance in European football.
