Bénin senate gets new leadership with Patrice Talon at the helm

On Thursday, August 6, 2026, senators in Porto-Novo convened to elect the first leadership team of Benin’s upper parliamentary chamber. Patrice Talon assumed the presidency of the Senate, with Louis Vlavonou, Alassane Séidou, and Adidjatou Mathys selected to support the institution’s key operational roles.

The establishment of this inaugural leadership structure marks a pivotal moment in Benin’s constitutional framework, enabling the Senate to commence its full legislative duties without delay. The newly elected officials will guide the chamber’s activities, ensuring procedural compliance and administrative efficiency.

Patrice Talon, now Senate President, will oversee legislative proceedings, represent the chamber externally, and uphold institutional governance standards. Louis Vlavonou has been appointed Vice-President, positioned to assist Talon and step in during his absence.

Alassane Séidou takes on the role of rapporteur, responsible for structuring parliamentary debates and documentation. Adidjatou Mathys serves as deputy rapporteur, providing additional support in legislative coordination.

The Senate’s first Bureau will play a central role in organizing debates, enforcing internal regulations, and aligning administrative processes with the chamber’s constitutional mandate.
