Chad’s President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno made a resolute declaration following a recent assault by Boko Haram militants. On Facebook, he pledged, ‘We will intensify our efforts with unwavering commitment until this menace is completely eradicated.’ His statement came in response to an attack carried out just days earlier by an offshoot of the Islamist group on a military base in Barka Tolorom, situated along the Chadian shoreline of Lake Chad.
The assault resulted in the loss of 24 soldiers, underscoring the persistent threat posed by the insurgency in the region. The attack has reignited concerns about the group’s evolving tactics and its renewed capability to strike military installations despite ongoing counter-insurgency operations.
