Burkina Faso approves Mio motorcycles on bike lanes amid mixed reactions

A decision that has sparked heated discussions is now in effect in Burkina Faso: Mio scooters are now permitted to use bike lanes. While some commuters praise the move as a step toward better traffic regulation, others voice concerns over potential safety risks and infrastructure limitations.

“Given that traffic is already governed by strict laws, allowing Mio scooters to share bike lanes with smaller motorcycles seems entirely reasonable,” shares Ben Ouattara, a delivery rider who welcomes the change.

Mio scooters, known for their compact size, lightweight design, and low maintenance costs, have become a popular choice for urban commuters in Ouagadougou and beyond. For city authorities, this policy aims to ease congestion on main roads by redirecting some two-wheelers to designated bike lanes, thereby improving flow and fostering better coexistence among road users.
