Chad: opposition leader Succès Masra receives presidential pardon from president Déby

Succès Masra’s prison sentence has been entirely remitted, as confirmed by a presidential decree signed by Mahamat Idriss Déby on Friday and subsequently released by the Chadian presidency. The former Prime Minister, who also leads the opposition party Les Transformateurs, had been serving a firm 20-year prison term for more than a year. This presidential grace, according to the decree, results in a “total remission of custodial sentences for the condemned.” Additionally, eight other political leaders, including former GCAP officials and heads of political parties, also benefited from this presidential act of clemency, allowing for their release following administrative procedures.

He assumed the role of Prime Minister in January 2024, just months before the presidential election which Mahamat Idriss Déby ultimately won. Masra’s party had publicly challenged the electoral process, alleging numerous irregularities during the ballot. Déby ascended to the nation’s leadership in 2021, following the death of his father, Idriss Déby Itno.
