After weeks of back-and-forth negotiations, both Toulouse FC and Sunderland AFC have reached a definitive agreement over the transfer of 20-year-old left-back Dayann Methalie to the Premier League. The young French international is set to undergo his medical exams in England this weekend.

The French top-flight is losing another promising talent. Following intense discussions, Toulouse and Sunderland have finalized the deal for left-back Dayann Methalie during the summer transfer window. The TFC and the Black Cats agreed on the terms this past Saturday, putting an end to weeks of speculation.

Toulouse had initially rejected an early bid of around €33 million for Methalie earlier this week. However, a revised offer of approximately €30 million—including potential bonuses—proved sufficient to secure the young defender’s future in England.

The revised agreement, featuring a higher base fee and adjusted bonus structures, allowed Toulouse—under the leadership of Kyril Louis-Dreyfus—to conclude the transfer. Methalie, 20, is scheduled to travel to England on Saturday to complete his medical examination.

Methalie: A rising star in French football

As reported late last month, Dayann Methalie has already agreed to a five-year contract with Sunderland. A product of Toulouse’s youth academy, the left-footed defender has shown remarkable progress this season, earning four caps for the French U21 national team.

The €30 million fee for Methalie marks another significant transfer exit for Toulouse, following the club’s recent sale of Brazilian midfielder Emersonn to Ipswich Town for close to €32 million.

Methalie established himself as a first-team regular last season, making 30 appearances across all competitions. His contributions included two goals and two assists in Ligue 1, showcasing his attacking prowess from the left flank. Despite interest from multiple foreign clubs during the transfer window, Methalie ultimately chose Sunderland’s ambitious project under manager Régis Le Bris, where an attacking style of football has been prioritized.
