Guinean special forces captivate Abidjan independence day spectators

Abidjan – A contingent of one hundred and fifty elite soldiers, clad in combat fatigues and camouflage gear, arms at the ready, with masks, balaclavas, and berets defining their distinctive look, commanded attention. Led by a coordinator proudly displaying the red, yellow, and green national flag, with sharpshooters positioned strategically behind, the renowned “Chameleon’s Step” marked the rhythmic advance of this specialized unit.

The Republic of Guinea’s Special Forces marched to sustained applause from the public, punctuated by standing ovations and crisp military salutes from the official tribune, during Côte d’Ivoire’s 66th independence anniversary celebrations.

This remarkable segment, which concluded the parade of foreign contingents in Abidjan on Friday, August 7, garnered significant attention. Across television channels and social media platforms, journalists, bloggers, and internet users universally praised the impressive demonstration of strength by the Guinean detachment.

Ivorian admiration for Guinean special forces

“I am Ivorian, but for me, this was the best parade. Moreover, with such serenity, I can’t stop watching it. I even downloaded the video. Thank you, Guinea,” remarked Deloy Dadié, clearly captivated by the performance.

Brice Kouadio echoed this enthusiasm, stating: “The best for me this year: imposing, powerful, fierce, and elegant!”

Constant Silué went further, comparing Guinea’s display to that of the Ivorian army: “I preferred the Guinean army’s parade to ours. It’s the first time I’ve seen the Guinean Special Forces. It’s magnificent. Many thanks, Guinea. You are sincere and true neighbors.”

Guinean pride and regional impact

In Guinea, images of the parade also ignited a wave of national pride. For Bory Diallo, “the sub-region is impressed by the Guinean army.”

Ibrahima Bah highlighted the symbolic significance of this participation: “Maintaining strong relationships with neighbors is crucial. There’s a substantial Guinean community in Côte d’Ivoire, and witnessing our army parade on such an occasion fills us Guineans, especially those residing in this magnificent country, with immense pride.”

This sentiment was shared by Sekou Moriba: “Despite everything, when we see them, our hearts swell with a kind of pride.”

This is not the first instance where the Guinean Special Forces have captured such widespread attention. Since their notable appearance on October 2, 2018, during Guinea’s own independence day celebrations, this elite unit has steadily established itself as one of the nation’s most spectacular military formations.
