Bamako on edge after reported plot targeting transitional leader

Bamako remains under a fragile calm following the violent incidents of April 25, which resulted in the death of General Sadio Camara, Mali’s second-in-command under the current military leadership. Authorities have now disclosed details of what they describe as a meticulously planned attempt on the lives of key state figures, including the transitional president, Assimi Goïta.

Military spokespeople revealed that explosive-laden vehicles were deployed in the operation. The official statement from the armed forces, delivered by Deputy Director of Public Relations, Commandant Djibrila Maïga, emphasized the gravity of the situation: This carefully orchestrated attack was designed to eliminate our highest authorities.

In a swift response, Burkina Faso’s media regulator announced the suspension of TV5Monde’s broadcasting rights. The decision stems from allegations that the international broadcaster had indirectly promoted terrorist propaganda and undermined Mali’s sovereign institutions through its coverage.

Public reaction in Ouagadougou

Residents of Ouagadougou have expressed mixed reactions to the ban. Some, like local resident Flore Guigma, support the move, arguing that broadcasters that inadvertently encourage terrorism should not be allowed to operate in our country. Others, such as Serge Théophile Bancé, criticize what they see as a patronizing approach to Sahelian affairs: These channels no longer reflect our reality; their reporting carries an air of superiority that undermines our dignity.

International press freedom advocates have also weighed in. Reporters Without Borders condemned the suspension, calling it an opaque restriction that further shrinks the country’s already limited media landscape.

Since Captain Ibrahim Traoré assumed leadership, several foreign news organizations—including major outlets like Le Monde, LCI, France 24, RFI, BBC News, and Voice of America—have faced suspension in Mali.
