Mbombela (South Africa), 8 june 2026 – Police in the northeastern province of Mpumalanga have arrested a man suspected of violently assaulting his grandmother in the Nkomazi municipality. The arrest took place on sunday 7 june 2026, following the circulation of a video on social media that captured the entire incident.
The events occurred at a tavern in eMagogeni. The footage shows the suspect repeatedly punching and kicking the victim before striking her with a beer crate. During the attack, a third person can be heard laughing in the background, while the severely injured victim lies on the ground unable to defend herself.

A pension dispute behind the Mpumalanga assault
According to preliminary investigation details released by law enforcement, the altercation stemmed from a financial disagreement. The elderly woman, noticing that her pension money meant for food and electricity had gone missing, went to the tavern to confront her grandson. He then turned on her.
The video quickly went viral, and with the help of local police, the suspect was identified and located. He is now in pre-trial detention and will soon appear before a provincial court on charges of assault and grievous bodily harm.
