Medical partnership between Sorbonne University and Benin’s CHIC hospital

The medical and research landscape in West Africa is poised for a significant transformation. Sorbonne Université, a leading European academic and medical institution, is turning its attention toward Bénin. A high-level delegation from the French university, led by its president, recently visited the Centre Hospitalier International de Calavi (CHIC) to explore this new cornerstone of Beninese public health.

This strategic visit outlines the framework for a promising alliance, aiming to bridge the gap between the academic world and hospital practice. The goal is to elevate healthcare delivery and medical training throughout the sub-region.

A world-class technical facility

Designed to redefine health standards and drastically reduce the need for medical evacuations abroad, the CHIC made a strong impression on the visiting officials. Spanning over 40,000 square meters with a capacity exceeding 430 beds, the center features the latest generation of imaging and treatment technologies, particularly in medical oncology, radiotherapy, and complex cardiology.

During their tour of the various care units and the medico-technical wing, the delegation observed the rigorous infrastructure, which adheres to the strictest international standards.

« Our shared ambition is to strengthen excellence in care, training, and research for the benefit of the Beninese and African populations. »

Toward tailored training and advanced research

This meeting was more than a formal visit; it marked the start of an active exploration phase. The objective is clear: to co-design specialized training programs that directly address the high-level needs of the CHIC, while building upon existing collaborations in Bénin.

By merging the academic expertise of Sorbonne Université with the technological potential of the CHIC, Bénin is doing more than just opening a modern hospital. It is establishing a sustainable hub of excellence and a center of attraction for the future of medicine on the African continent.
