The Atlas Lionesses have secured their place in the semi-finals of the CAF Women’s Nations Cup. Morocco defeated South Africa 2-1 in a thrilling quarter-final clash, avenging their 2022 final loss to the Banyana Banyana. This victory marks a historic milestone for the South Africans as well, who were eliminated in the quarter-finals for the first time since Desiree Ellis took charge in 2016. Meanwhile, the Moroccan team has also booked their ticket to the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Morocco’s shaky defense falters

Morocco had entered the tournament as the only team yet to concede a goal. The Atlas Lionesses were determined to maintain their clean sheet, but the match began sluggishly. It wasn’t until the 14th minute that Thembi Kgatlana tested Khadija Errmichi, whose save kept the score at bay. However, Morocco’s breakthrough came through an individual brilliance from Sakina Ouzraoui. After receiving a cross from Hanane Ait El Haj, the Tenerife forward unleashed a stunning volley to put Morocco ahead (1-0, 32nd minute).

The first half ended with Morocco holding a narrow lead, but the second half saw the Atlas Lionesses extend their advantage. Fikile Magama fouled Ghizlane Chebbak inside the box, giving Morocco a golden opportunity. Ait El Haj, who had set up the first goal, stepped up to double the lead from the penalty spot (2-0, 50th minute). Just as the match seemed decided, Magama redeemed herself by pulling one back (2-1, 67th minute). Despite a late surge from South Africa, Morocco’s defense held firm. The Atlas Lionesses now advance to their third consecutive semi-final in the competition.
