Nice faces daunting penalties ahead of Saint-Étienne playoff showdown

The stakes couldn’t be higher for both sides as OGC Nice prepares for their Ligue 1 playoff clash against AS Saint-Étienne. The disciplinary commission of the French Football League (LFP) has handed down harsh penalties against Nice following the chaotic scenes at Allianz Riviera last Sunday, after the team’s disappointing draw with Metz sealed their fate.
Supporters stormed the pitch, launched flares, and caused significant damage, prompting swift action from league officials. The sanctions imposed by the LFP are severe: two full stadium closures at Allianz Riviera, one of which comes with a suspended match.
Playoff schedule disrupted
The consequences are immediate. The first leg of the playoff, originally set to take place in Nice on May 29, will now be played behind closed doors. The return leg in Saint-Étienne on May 26 remains unaffected by the sanctions but could see Nice missing key internationals.
Adding to their woes, the team may be deprived of several players called up for international duty. The FIFA has rejected the exemption request that would have allowed Nice and Saint-Étienne players participating in the upcoming World Cup to feature in the playoffs. This decision further complicates Nice’s already challenging path to securing Ligue 1 status.
