Ousmane Sonko comments on 2029 presidential run speculation
In a recent appearance on France 24, Ousmane Sonko, leader of the Pastef party and President of the National Assembly, addressed growing speculation about his potential candidacy in the 2029 presidential election. When pressed on whether he would run regardless of circumstances, Sonko maintained a cautious stance.
He emphasized that discussions about his 2029 candidacy are premature. “There are many claims circulating about my potential candidacy, but I prefer to wait for the right moment,” he stated. “My party will decide its candidate in due course. We are not there yet.”
Regarding the possibility of President Diomaye Faye seeking re-election, Sonko clarified that he does not interfere in the incumbent’s decisions. “He has his own path to follow, just as I have mine,” he remarked. “I will not speculate on whether the current president will run again.”
