Pastef party to elect Ousmane Sonko as sole leader at 2026 congress

The Patriotes africains du Sénégal pour le travail, l’éthique et la fraternité (Pastef) is set to hold its first-ever national elective congress on June 6 and 7, 2026 in Dakar. The landmark gathering will focus on electing the party’s new president, with current leader Ousmane Sonko poised to secure his position as the sole candidate for re-election.

In a move that underscores the party’s internal cohesion, the Haute autorité de régulation du parti (Harp) has confirmed Sonko as the only valid nominee for the presidency. However, seven other candidacies were rejected due to procedural gaps. According to the Harp, the rejected applications either lacked essential documents—such as identification or membership cards—or contained irregularities that could not be addressed after the submission deadline of May 20.

The upcoming congress serves a dual purpose: not only will it formalize Sonko’s leadership, but it will also outline the party’s strategic vision for the coming years. With local elections slated for 2027 and the presidential race in 2029, the decisions made in Dakar will shape Pastef’s trajectory in Senegal’s evolving political landscape.
