Democratic Republic of the Congo: Senate President Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde endorses Tshisekedi’s referendum initiative

The gathering at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Bandal on Sunday, July 26, 2026, brought together key figures from the political coalition Act and Build (AB)—including the Presidium, national deputies, senators, party secretaries-general, and executive secretaries—for an evening of strategic discussions.

This long-awaited meeting, held on the sidelines of the closing of the extraordinary parliamentary session and the start of recess, centered on two critical themes: assessing the coalition’s progress and addressing pressing national issues, notably the proposed referendum law and ongoing dialogue efforts.

Unanimous support for constitutional reform and national consensus

Following extensive deliberations, the AB coalition reached a consensus on strengthening internal cohesion—between elected officials and the Presidium on one side, and between lawmakers and government representatives on the other.

The coalition ultimately resolved to fully back President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi in his pursuit of advancing the referendum law and fostering inclusive dialogue. This decision underscores a collective commitment to constitutional reform and national stability, aligning with the government’s broader agenda for democratic consolidation.
