Thousands rally behind ouSmane sonko in Dakar protest march

The streets of Dakar transformed into a vibrant sea of white on Sunday, May 17, as hundreds of supporters gathered to welcome Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko. The occasion marked the conclusion of a mass peaceful protest march organized by the local branch of his political movement, Pastef.

The procession, themed “Dakar in Motion Behind the Pros”, kicked off at the Nation Square before winding its way to the Jet d’Eau roundabout. Chanting “Sonko President” in unison, the crowd greeted the Prime Minister—dressed in white—with roaring applause and warm embraces. The atmosphere was electric, underscoring the deep public enthusiasm surrounding Sonko’s leadership.

Among the dignitaries present were influential party figures, including Dakar’s Mayor Abass Fall and Higher Education Minister Daouda Ngom. Each stepped into the crowd, reinforcing the message of solidarity and collective action central to the event’s purpose.

The march served a dual purpose: to highlight citizen engagement and to rally support ahead of Pastef’s upcoming elective congress on June 6, 2026. Organizers emphasized the peaceful nature of the gathering, positioning it as a celebration of democratic participation and unity under Sonko’s vision for the nation.

As supporters lined the route, many waved placards and raised fists, echoing their commitment to Sonko’s political agenda. The event not only showcased the party’s organizational strength but also signaled its growing influence in shaping the country’s future.
