What Senegal’s new Air Sénégal Boeing 737-800 means for the country’s aviation

Air Sénégal has taken delivery of a new Boeing 737-800, named “Gorée,” which the national carrier describes as a key milestone for its fleet and for Senegal’s aviation independence. The handover was confirmed in Dakar on September 7, 2026.

This purchase was made possible with backing from the Senegalese state through the Ministry of Land and Air Transport, led by Abdoul Ahad Ndiaye. Air Sénégal sees this as a clear sign of the government’s resolve—under President Bassirou Diomaye Faye—to equip the nation with an air transport tool that matches its economic, tourism, and global ambitions.

The aircraft is a single-aisle model from the Boeing 737 NG family, known for its flexibility on short- and medium-haul routes. It will give the airline added capacity to operate its network. Configured in two classes, it seats 174 passengers: 12 in Business and 162 in Economy, all on Recaro seats. The jet is 39.5 meters long with a wingspan of 35.8 meters, and features three lavatories and three galleys.

Naming the plane “Gorée” carries deep meaning. Gorée Island, a reminder of the transatlantic slave trade and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1978, stands as a universal symbol of memory, resilience, and intercultural dialogue. Air Sénégal describes this aircraft as a “flying ambassador,” set to carry that name across Africa and beyond, linking Senegal’s history to its global openness and its diaspora.

Beyond its symbolic weight, this new addition is expected to boost Senegal’s tourism sector by making it easier for visitors to arrive and strengthening the country’s links with regional and international markets. The airline lists several strategic goals tied to this acquisition: enhancing operational capacity, supporting its growth, reinforcing Senegal’s aviation sovereignty, and improving the passenger experience.
