Benin leads ocean prediction training with OPERA project success

The Republic of Benin has taken a bold step forward in addressing critical coastal and marine challenges across the Gulf of Guinea. Through the OPERA (Ocean Prediction Enhancement in Regions of Africa) initiative—a seven-week online training program—Benin has emerged as a central hub in global maritime expertise, mobilizing nearly 1,200 participants from 111 countries.

Benin’s universities at the forefront of ocean science

The program, coordinated nationally by the UNESCO / CIPMA Chair at the University of Abomey-Calavi (UAC), has established Benin as a key player in strengthening scientific and technical capacities in oceanography. With 1,162 registrants, Benin stands out as the most represented country in the cohort, reflecting strong engagement from educators, students, and environmental managers nationwide.

Dr. Frédéric Bonou, researcher and lecturer at UAC, highlights the program’s practical approach: “This training goes beyond theory. We’ve built each module to connect directly with real-world challenges—whether for fishermen, coastal managers, or researchers in Benin.”

From satellite data to coastal protection

Over 21 hours of interactive modules, participants explore advanced tools such as satellite observation systems, Argo floats, and high-resolution numerical models. The focus is on equipping local professionals with actionable skills to tackle pressing maritime issues:

  • Coastal erosion prevention: Better forecasting of wave patterns and tidal dynamics to safeguard Benin’s fragile shoreline.
  • Sustainable fisheries management: Mapping and predicting high-yield fishing zones to ensure resource conservation.
  • Maritime safety: Strengthening surveillance of Benin’s territorial waters and mitigating pollution risks.

Certified expertise for Benin’s future leaders

A select group of 500 learners received personalized mentorship, culminating in a formal certification from the UNESCO Chair at UAC and the University of Toulouse. This recognition underscores the program’s commitment to nurturing a new generation of ocean scientists in Benin.

European partnership fuels maritime innovation

The initiative’s success stems from a robust collaboration between the University of Abomey-Calavi, the Gulf of Guinea Ocean Sciences Summer School (GGOSSS), and Mercator Ocean International. Funding from the European Union’s Arc X / Global Gateway program has enabled this cross-border exchange, uniting experts from Benin, France, the United States, and Spain.

By placing Beninese youth and volunteer researchers at the heart of this international network, the country is reinforcing its position as a sovereign leader in sustainable ocean science—turning marine challenges into opportunities for growth and resilience.
