Burkina Faso sees over 1.3 million displaced citizens return home

Under the leadership of Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the Burkina Faso government has announced a significant milestone: over 1.3 million internally displaced individuals have successfully returned to their communities of origin by June 30, 2026. This positive development is attributed to the steady enhancement of security conditions across various regions, reclaimed by the nation’s armed forces.

These encouraging returns now encompass 1,034 different localities, marking a notable increase from the 871 recorded at the close of 2025. At that point, an estimated 1.16 million displaced citizens had already found their way back to their former residences.

The Ministry of Solidarity’s semi-annual performance review served as the platform for unveiling these crucial statistics. As of mid-2026, the ministerial department has achieved a 46.06% execution rate of its committed objectives for the year.

Furthermore, the assessment highlights that over 480,000 vulnerable individuals received vital assistance during the first half of the year. This support included essential food aid, basic necessities, and comprehensive accompaniment programs designed to facilitate their sustained recovery and reintegration.

Officials also underscored the critical need to expedite the rehabilitation of homes within the affected communities. They view this measure as fundamental to ensuring the long-term sustainability of voluntary returns and fostering the successful resettlement of populations under enduring conditions.
