The Republic of Burundi has once again expressed its unconditional and steadfast support for Morocco’s territorial integrity, including its sovereignty over the Western Sahara. This declaration came during an official working visit to Rabat by Burundi’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Edouard Bizimana, who held comprehensive talks with his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita.
In a joint communiqué issued after their meeting, Bujumbura firmly backed Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the sole viable and realistic solution to the regional dispute. The Burundian government also pledged its continuing support for United Nations-led efforts to advance negotiations grounded in this proposal.
Diplomatic alignment strengthens Morocco’s regional positioning
This endorsement from Burundi follows a pattern of growing African recognition of Morocco’s position on the Sahara issue. The East African nation welcomed the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797, viewing it as a clear endorsement of the autonomy initiative under Moroccan sovereignty as the foundation for a fair, lasting, and mutually acceptable political settlement.
The meeting between the two foreign ministers took place against the backdrop of Morocco’s intensified diplomatic campaign to consolidate international backing for its initiative. Both sides emphasized the need to maintain momentum in resolving the decades-long territorial dispute through peaceful and constructive dialogue.
The Burundian delegation’s visit to Rabat underscores the strengthening ties between the two nations and their shared commitment to regional stability and cooperation.
