Côte d’Ivoire celebrates women’s role in nation-building with inaugural week-long event

The Femme Ivoirienne en Politique (FIP) organization launched the first-ever National Week of Women Nation-Builders on Thursday, July 30, at the Yopougon town hall. This event, running from August 1 to August 4, 2026, coincides with the 66th anniversary of Côte d’Ivoire’s independence.

Reflecting on progress and future challenges

The initiative, themed “66 Years of Ivorian Independence: Women’s Achievements and Future Horizons,” aims to highlight women’s vital contributions to the country’s political, economic, social, and cultural development. It also serves as a platform to address ongoing challenges and shape future policies.

Rebecca Yao, President of FIP, emphasized the importance of evaluating progress. “We saw a need to assess women’s gains since independence, pinpoint lingering obstacles, and propose actionable solutions,” she stated.

Key activities: dialogue, recognition, and policy recommendations

From August 1 to 3, the event will host a national symposium at the Yopougon town hall. The program includes:

• A keynote address to kick off discussions;
• Sixteen thematic panels covering women’s leadership, health, education, economic empowerment, youth engagement, and gender rights;
• An exhibition showcasing trailblazing women, successful female entrepreneurship projects, and impactful programs.

The symposium will culminate in a white paper outlining actionable recommendations for policymakers to implement.

A gala evening to honor 66 pioneering women

The highlight of the week will be the gala dinner on August 4 at the Sofitel Hôtel Ivoire, where 66 women will be honored for their lifelong dedication to nation-building since 1960.

Building a lasting tradition

Rebecca Yao expressed her commitment to making this an annual event. “Before introducing new proposals, we will revisit the resolutions from each edition to track progress and ensure accountability,” she said.

Mireille Bamba, Yopougon’s deputy, commended the initiative and reaffirmed the support of Adama Bictogo, the mayor-deputy. Organizers aim to establish this week as a vital annual forum for dialogue, reflection, and recognition of women’s indispensable role in Côte d’Ivoire’s development.
