Gabon’s manganese sector shifts toward local processing

Gabon’s manganese production slipped to 9.1 million tonnes, spotlighting critical logistical hurdles along the supply chain. Frequent breakdowns and bottlenecks on the railway network—particularly the Transgabonais route to the Port of Owendo—have repeatedly disrupted operations. Yet the fourth quarter of 2025 marked a significant rebound in output.

The revival stems from the restart of mining operations at Moanda and Franceville, driving a 10.8% increase in the national production index compared to the previous quarter, as reported by the Directorate General of Economy and Fiscal Policy. Beyond extraction, the sector is gradually embracing local transformation initiatives.

In July 2026, the Gabonese government and French multinational Eramet formalized a landmark agreement in Paris. The deal commits Eramet to processing up to 700,000 tonnes of manganese ore annually within Gabon by the end of 2031. Three potential pathways are under consideration: upgrading the metallurgical complex in Moanda, establishing new processing units in Owendo, or constructing a manganese oxide battery plant near Libreville.

Addressing public skepticism, the Ministry of Industry clarified that the 700,000-tonne commitment applies exclusively to Eramet. Other industry players are expected to contribute to the transformation effort as well.

Eramet is also prioritizing sustainable energy solutions and biochar integration, reinforcing the industry’s commitment to meeting the 2029 deadline for halting raw ore exports.
