Strengthening economic and infrastructure links

On August 11, 2026, Madagascar’s President of Refoundation, Colonel Michael Randrianirina, joined Chad’s 66th independence anniversary celebrations in N’Djamena. The event at Place de la Nation featured a prominent military parade. Invited by Chadian President Marshal Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, Randrianirina attended alongside Guinea-Bissau’s President General Horta N’Tam. All three leaders wore military attire during the ceremony.
Beyond the festivities, the visit facilitated critical discussions between Antananarivo and N’Djamena. The day prior, Randrianirina and Déby Itno convened to explore avenues for enhanced collaboration. Key topics included economic policies and infrastructure development. Randrianirina emphasized continental unity as vital for progress. “When African nations support one another, collective advancement becomes inevitable,” he remarked.

Reviving historical partnerships

The Malagasy leader also highlighted the need to revitalize Madagascar-Chad relations. While both nations share deep diplomatic roots, cooperation has waned in recent years. Multiple sectors, however, present untapped potential. In response, Chad’s president announced plans for an upcoming state visit to Madagascar to solidify future collaborations.
Both countries trace their modern histories to French colonial rule, achieving republic status in 1958 and independence in 1960.
