Mali faces potential US military response to JNIM threat

The Trump administration is evaluating the possibility of launching a military intervention in Mali to counter the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaïda-linked coalition operating across the Sahel region. The discussions reflect ongoing internal debates within the US government regarding the most effective strategy to address the escalating terror threat.

Divisions within the administration over military action

While some officials advocate for direct US involvement, Sebastian Gorka, a key figure in the White House’s counterterrorism efforts, has emerged as a prominent voice in favor of military strikes against JNIM. However, a senior US official declined to confirm or deny reports of potential airstrikes, emphasizing instead the administration’s broader focus on strengthening regional security partnerships.

Washington’s push for enhanced military cooperation

The same official highlighted the transnational nature of terrorism in the Sahel, urging North and West African nations to bolster their military capabilities with American equipment and training. The call aligns with efforts to bolster the Alliance of Sahel States (AES), which is leading the fight against JNIM and the Islamic State affiliate in the region.

Criticism of Russian security cooperation in Mali

The official went on to criticize Moscow’s security partnerships in Mali, describing them as ineffective in combating terrorism. The deteriorating security situation, they argued, underscores the risks of relying on external actors with limited success in counterterrorism operations—a lesson other African nations should heed.

The Pentagon has not commented on the discussions, while the State Department reiterated its firm condemnation of terrorist activities in Mali. JNIM, recognized as the primary Al-Qaïda-affiliated militant group in the Sahel since 2018, remains a designated foreign terrorist organization by the United States.
