New pediatric unit at Koutiala hospital in Mali

new pediatric unit at Koutiala hospital in Mali

Discover Koutiala in southern Mali, where a state-of-the-art pediatric unit has transformed child healthcare in the region.

Since 2009, Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières) has operated a pediatric program in Koutiala, southeastern Mali, aimed at reducing child mortality through preventive and curative care. To enhance the treatment of young patients, MSF initiated the construction of a new pediatric unit—a project that spanned over a year.

Malaria remains a leading cause of child mortality in the Koutiala region. Children suffering from malaria often experience severe appetite loss, which can lead to malnutrition. Conversely, malnourished children are more susceptible to severe illnesses. To break this dangerous cycle, MSF provides free, high-quality hospital care for children with life-threatening conditions and expands pediatric services in villages throughout the district to prevent complications.

The new pediatric unit consolidates all patient care in one modern facility, significantly improving medical efficiency and outcomes.

During malaria peak season—typically from June to December, depending on rainfall—and the lean season (October/November), up to 1,000 children are admitted to the pediatric and malnutrition wards at Koutiala Hospital, supported by MSF.

In episode 2, follow Luca, accompanied by Marie Hortense, MSF’s medical coordinator in Koutiala, and Hyppolite, deputy project coordinator, as they visit the Annex—a dedicated facility for handling large patient surges.

In episode 3, join Luca and Ana, Construction Project Coordinator, on a visit to the construction site. This episode offers a sneak peek at the final appearance of the new pediatric unit.

Episode 4 brings the long-awaited reveal: the grand opening of the new hospital. Join Nicolas and Albert as they explore this state-of-the-art facility and highlight the benefits for patients. The new pediatric unit centralizes all care in one modern, upgraded space.

In the final episode, Nicolas travels to Konséguéla, about 50 kilometers from Koutiala, where MSF supports a local health center.
