Fleeing clashes between farmers and herders, more than 600 Nigerians have crossed the border into Cameroon to take refuge in the North West region.

Coming from northern Nigeria, more than 600 people, including children and women, have sought shelter in Nwa, in Donga-Mantung, North West region. They fled the recurring conflicts between Mambila farmers and Fulani herders. On arrival, they were received by local authorities.

The Sub-Divisional Officer of Nwa, Esapa Jim Esapa, organised their reception and care. The authority assessed the situation and says it is working in agreement with the council to take the necessary measures to help these refugees live in dignified conditions. 

Farmer-herder conflicts are recurrent in Nigeria, often prompting a rush of populations towards Cameroon. Several Nigerian refugees live on Cameroonian territory. This is additional pressure for the authorities of North West Cameroon, which is grappling with a security crisis.
