Senegal’s local elections: Sonko’s ultimatum on voting date

During a campaign stop in Louga as part of voter card distribution efforts, Sonko took the opportunity to challenge Faye directly.

Addressing a packed crowd of supporters, Sonko referenced recent administrative decisions, including the removal of certain public officials from their positions. He emphasized that while such decrees fall within the president’s authority, the same urgency must apply to setting a definitive date for the local elections.

« Issuing decrees to dismiss individuals like Fadilou Keïta and Waly Diouf Bodiang is within his powers—no one disputes that. But in the same vein, he must use a decree to establish the election date. These are all within the same realm of executive action,» Sonko declared.

No delays, says Sonko, as political stakes rise

The Pastef leader has consistently opposed any postponement of the local elections, reiterating that stance in Louga. He argued that the absence of a scheduled date may stem from concerns within the ruling camp about the party’s growing momentum and grassroots mobilization.

« The president and his allies may fear the passion and energy of Pastef’s activists and supporters, » Sonko suggested, framing the delay as politically motivated rather than logistical.
