Sonko reveals details of his dismissal amid political tensions in Senegal

Ousmane Sonko sheds light on his removal from office

In a press conference held this Tuesday, Ousmane Sonko, leader of the PASTEF party, disclosed the precise circumstances surrounding his dismissal from government. His remarks, delivered with clarity, put an end to weeks of speculation about the rift between him and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

The political rupture unfolded during a meeting at the Presidential Palace. Sonko revealed that the President had summoned him to express his dissatisfaction with their collaboration. « The Head of State informed me that he believes the partnership can no longer continue », Sonko stated. The President cited multiple public statements made by Sonko as problematic grounds for his decision.

Rather than accepting blame or remaining silent, Sonko took a firm stance. « I told him I would make it easy for him by resigning », he recounted. His response was direct: « If he wants to dismiss me, he should own up to it and do so ». This bold declaration underscored Sonko’s refusal to accept responsibility for a decision he viewed as externally imposed.

Sonko also shared that he had previously proposed leaving the government to lead the National Assembly while pledging unwavering support for the President’s agenda. That proposal, however, never materialized.

The timing of his removal has sparked debate, with Sonko emphasizing his unwillingness to bear the burden of this political fallout. « I refused to take the blame for this separation », he asserted, framing the situation as a unilateral decision by the President.
