The administration of President Donald Trump is actively considering military action within Mali, targeting the Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), an organization with direct ties to Al-Qaeda. While no definitive decision has been reached, this potential strategy has already sparked considerable debate among American officials. On the ground in Mali, opinions are similarly divided regarding such an intervention.

JNIM currently stands as the most formidable jihadist group operating across the Sahel region. Washington assesses that the threat posed by this armed entity now transcends Mali’s borders, extending its reach into several West African coastal nations.

Malian perspectives on potential US intervention

American authorities contend that the security alliance between Bamako and Russia has proven ineffective in halting the expansion of these armed factions. Despite these discussions, the Pentagon has refrained from officially confirming any plans or announcing a formal decision.

However, the prospect of a US military intervention on Malian soil elicits diverse reactions among the Malian populace.

One resident of Bamako expressed openness, stating that any action contributing to peace across the entire territory, from Kaye to Kidal, would be welcomed, whether from the United States or other partners.

Another individual commented on the presence of Russian forces and the potential arrival of Americans, viewing it within the realm of diplomacy. This person emphasized that Malian authorities are best positioned to determine what serves the population’s interests or what might be detrimental. They concluded that the option of American military intervention in Mali is not inherently a bad idea.

For several years, Mali has experienced a persistent deterioration in security, despite the withdrawal of French forces and the deployment of Russian mercenaries. JNIM attacks have escalated, even reaching the capital, Bamako. Concurrently, human rights organizations have accused the Malian army and its Russian allies of committing abuses against civilian populations.

Malian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Abdoulaye Diop, addressed the issue on Thursday during a discussion related to an upcoming defense and security exhibition in Bamako. He stated that Bamako awaits a clear articulation of Washington’s position, while also stressing the paramount importance of Mali’s sovereignty.

A potential geopolitical shift in the Sahel

According to Abdoulmoumouni Abbas, an expert in preventing radicalization and violent extremism in the Sahel and Lake Chad regions, a potential American intervention would represent more than just a security measure; it would mark a significant geopolitical turning point in the Sahel, a region where Russia has substantially increased its influence in recent years.

Abbas elaborated, explaining that this potential US return should be understood in terms of strategic interests, allowing for an expansion of their operational capabilities. This would grant them a comprehensive overview of the entire Sahel region and its ongoing efforts to combat transnational organized crime.

However, he cautioned that the outcomes of previous US strikes in Nigeria raise significant questions. Abbas specifically noted that initial airstrikes in northern Nigeria, within Sokoto and Kebbi states, reportedly failed to hit their intended targets.

In recent months, the United States has reportedly intensified its intelligence cooperation with Bamako.
