Economic expansion in Cameroon
Nigerian industrial giant Dangote targets Cameroon’s oil sector with new multi-billion investment
Expanding beyond cement into oil infrastructure
The Dangote Group is currently engaged in advanced negotiations to establish significant petroleum sector investments in Cameroon, focusing primarily on storage and transportation infrastructure for petroleum products. This strategic move follows closely on the heels of the group’s recent commitment to double the production capacity of its cement plant in Douala.
During a high-level meeting in Yaoundé with Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute, Devakumar Edwin, Dangote Group’s Vice President for Oil and Gas, outlined the company’s ambitious plans. “We are prepared to make substantial investments in Cameroon’s oil sector, particularly in storage and transportation infrastructure to meet the country’s growing energy needs,” Edwin stated.
Addressing critical energy infrastructure gaps
The Cameroonian government views this potential partnership as crucial in addressing both immediate and long-term energy challenges. With the National Refining Company (Sonara) still recovering from the devastating 2019 refinery fire, the country faces persistent fuel supply challenges. Dangote’s proposed investments could provide immediate relief while supporting the broader national energy security strategy.
Dual strategy for energy independence
Government officials emphasize the need for a strategic partnership with Dangote that balances short-term solutions with long-term goals. While utilizing Dangote’s fuel supplies and capital could stabilize the market in the near term, the administration remains committed to Sonara’s reconstruction project, estimated at 700 billion CFA francs. This comprehensive approach aims to ensure Cameroon achieves lasting energy independence.
For the Dangote Group, this expansion into Cameroon’s oil sector represents another milestone in its pan-African industrial growth strategy, following successful ventures in cement production across multiple countries.
