Khardiata Tandian remains jailed as Sonko signature forgery case delayed again

The judicial saga surrounding the alleged falsification of Ousmane Sonko’s signature has taken another unexpected turn, with Khardiata Tandian still behind bars as the Dakar Criminal Court postpones its verdict for the second time.

Another delay in a high-profile case

The court had initially scheduled its decision for July 9, 2026, but the judge opted once more to defer the ruling. This latest postponement marks the second delay in proceedings, with the new verdict now slated for July 23. The decision to push back the hearing stems from the same procedural necessity as before: the court requires the presence of an additional individual linked to the case.

A missing key figure in the forgery allegations

The case extends beyond Khardiata Tandian, whose alleged involvement in the signature falsification has kept her incarcerated for over a year. Chérif Zeyni Abidin Sy, identified as her presumed accomplice, was absent during the trial and must now appear before the court before a final decision can be rendered. His continued absence has once again stalled the proceedings, prompting the judge to adjourn the deliberation.

Defense pushes for provisional release

In light of the latest postponement, Khardiata Tandian’s legal team filed a motion for her provisional release. The defense argued that all procedural documents had already been submitted, rendering her ongoing detention unnecessary. They further contended that there was no risk of witness tampering or interference with the judicial process, as all testimonies had been recorded and the facts solidified.

Prosecutor cites public order concerns

The prosecution, however, opposed the motion, citing potential risks to public order and the defendant’s failure to provide sufficient guarantees of appearing for future hearings. The court ultimately sided with the prosecutor, leaving Khardiata Tandian in detention until the next hearing on July 23.

A year behind bars and mounting family pressures

The defense highlighted the severe social and familial consequences of Khardiata Tandian’s prolonged incarceration, emphasizing her role as a married mother. They argued that the time already served could effectively cover any sentence she might receive, making further detention unjustified. Despite these pleas, the court maintained its stance, leaving her fate unresolved for now.

The case hinges on the missing accomplice

The trial’s outcome now rests on the presence of Chérif Zeyni Abidin Sy. His absence during the initial hearing had already forced a delay, and the court remains insistent on hearing his account before delivering a final verdict. Until then, Khardiata Tandian will remain in custody, her request for provisional release denied.
